The “Loki” Series Cheat-Sheet

The new Disney+ series Loki is just around the corner, and it takes place in a whole new setting with all new characters. Marvel movies and shows have always done a great job of keeping audiences informed about the amazing worlds they create for us, but if you need to catch up a bit so you aren’t going into this thing blind, allow me to be your guide.

Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for everything leading up to the Loki series. So do not read any further if you have not caught up on the movies and other Disney+ Marvel series.

So first things first…

Isn’t Loki Dead?

A still from Loki’s death scene in Avengers: Infinity War

Well… Sadly, yes. Thanos gave his neck a hand-hug until he stopped twitching and moved on to Valhalla. But thanks to some timeline trickery in Avengers: Endgame, he is back! Or at least a version of him.

Let me explain.

One of the major plot points in Avengers: Endgame was time travel. After the destruction of the Infinity Stones, the Avengers needed to travel to the past and gather the Stones from previous points in time so they could use them to restore the lives lost in the infamous “snap”.

The Ancient One Explaining Branching Timelines in Avengers: Endgame

While trying to talk the Ancient One into giving over the Time Stone, Bruce Banner received a lesson in time travel stating that if any of the stones was not returned to its original place in time, a new branch timeline would be created.

Lo and behold, while Tony Stark and Scott Lang attempted to grab the Space Stone from New York right after Loki’s attack (aka, the end of The Avengers) they experienced a hiccup. The stone was knocked from Tony Stark’s hands and landed at Loki’s feet. This past version of Loki quickly scooped up the Space Stone and used it to teleport away.

A Still from Loki’s Escape in Avenger’s Endgame

This is the Loki we will be following in the new Disney+ series — a Loki who has just been defeated by the Avengers after attacking New York. This Loki has now created a branch timeline by stealing the Space Stone and altering the correct flow of time.

Which leads to the next question.

Where is Loki?

TVA Headquarters

After teleporting away from the Avengers, Loki is quickly apprehended by a group called the Time Variance Authority (or TVA). They arrest him and take him to their Headquarters for processing. It is tough to say how much comic lore this series will adopt, but it’s safe to say that the TVA Headquarters exists outside the normal flow of time, thanks to the line, “Time passes differently here in the TVA” from a handful of Loki Trailers.

The trailers show a variety of other places they show will take us, but it is safe to say that the TVA Headquarters will be one of the primary settings.

Who are the TVA?

Still from the “Loki” trailer.

The Time Variance Authority or TVA are essentially time cops. They watch over and regulate the proper flow of time, or the “sacred timeline” as it is called in the Variant Identified clip released on Marvel Entertainment’s youtube channel.

We will meet a variety of characters belonging to the TVA as we make our way through this new series, but I believe the most prominent will be:

Mobius M. Mobius

Mobius M. Mobius

Played by Owen Wilson. The trailers paint this character as a TVA bureaucrat eager to enlist Loki’s help in order to fix the broken time stream. Mobius seems to be Loki’s handler, and perhaps even a fan, based on the way he is going out of his way to vouch for Loki to other members of the TVA who seem uncertain about his intentions.

Terminatrix/Judge Ravonna Renslayer

The pictured character, played by Gugu Mabatha-Raw, has not yet had her name publicly released, so it is hard to say for sure who she is, but it is heavily rumored that she is playing Terminatrix/Judge Ravonna Renslayer, who has a complex comic history that may or may not play out in this series. Either way, she definitely seems to have a very prominent role within the TVA.

Hunter B15

Hunter B15

Played by Wunmi Mosaku, Hunter B15 seems to be an officer of the TVA responsible for apprehension of “variants”, or people who have deviated from their intended time stream.

When and Where Can I Watch This?

You can check out the first episode of Loki streaming on Disney+ on June 9th. If you haven’t already watched Wandavision and Falcon and Winter Soldier, you can catch up on those as well.

I have to say I have a great feeling about this show. I have enjoyed every Disney+ Marvel series so far, in fact I adored Wandavision, but I am confident this is going to be my favorite one yet. June 9th can’t get here fast enough!

Do you have questions I didn’t answer here? Leave a comment below and I will do my best to answer them, if an answer exists. Keep in mind, I only know what has been released to the public, and anything beyond that is theory, but I do my best to make it clear when I am answering with certainty and when I am theorizing.
